Leave a comment » Memorial Day 2008As last Friday wound down, I heard a lot of people talking about the coming 3 day weekend and what they were going to do. Take a short trip, go to the beach, have a cookout, etc. All good things to look forward to - but so few people I talked to really knew WHY it was a long weekend - and if they did know why, few knew exactly WHAT Memorial Day really is. I’m sure there are some people who would say that I’m overreacting - but nonchalance / ignorance like this annoys me to no end.
Memorial Day was first observed back in 1868 when General John A. Logan set aside the day to remember the soldiers who had died in the Civil War. Since then it has become a day to remember all of the brave U.S. men and women who have died in war.
Each year, National Observance takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetary.
This was created by Ray Sorensen up in Iowa. A perfect example of how a few small words can really hit home.
So, no matter what you decide to do on this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember all those who have given so much to ensure that we can continue to enjoy our freedom.
